Biography

I received training in drawing and painting at the University of Utah, graduating with a BFA in 1967, followed by a one-year stint as a VISTA Volunteer in northern Appalachia. That experience provided the inspiration for my MFA thesis, And All These Children, which I completed at the University of Utah in 1971.
I eventually returned to graduate school in Bologna, Italy, at The Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Bologna Center, a graduate program with a multinational student body and faculty. I intended to combine the study of international relations with my art degrees in order to become a diplomat with the United States Information Agency. Instead, following graduation, I landed back at the Bologna Center (recently renamed SAIS-Europe). There, I was head of alumni relations, public affairs and publications. I ended up staying for 15 years. (Read "Room for a View," Continuum, Spring 2001, which recounts some of my experiences in and impressions of Bologna.
After returning to Utah, I worked at the University of Utah Alumni Association as managing editor of Continuum, the University's magazine. I retired in May 2011 and have since devoted much of my time to painting. I also enjoy photography, gardening, and walking my dog Pip. Many of my paintings were inspired by scenes in the parks I have frequented with my dogs Goldie, Muffin and Pip.
